Merit Badge Counselors Needed

The 2017 annual Merit Badge Counselor Re-registration for Indian Prairie District has been completed. Thanks to the 200 counselors who currently serve boys in the district.

The updated counselor lists were recently distributed to the unit merit badge counselor contacts.  These lists should only be distributed to registered adults in your unit with a need for this information. As per BSA guidelines only the unit leader (or his delegate) should give information about counselors to boys.

Currently, the district has no counselors for the following badges:

  • Animation
  • Archery*
  • Canoeing*
  • Lifesaving*
  • Metalwork
  • Rowing*
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Water Sports
  • Whitewater*

* certification required  (see http://threefirescouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/TFC-High-Risk-MB-Certification-Policy_06.15.16.pdf )

The following badges have no counselors willing to serve outside their units:

  • Dentistry
  • Pottery
  • Public Health
  • Textile
  • Theater

As always, we encourage counselors to volunteer to serve all district units – they would probably get at most 1 to 2 outside requests per year, but it gives the smaller units more flexibility.  Existing counselors may change their status to work with other scouts outside their units or change the badges they wish to counsel by submitting a signed Merit Badge Counselor Information Form (with qualifications), http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf, to either a council scout shop or Dave Rypka.

If you are not currently a counselor and wish to register, please submit the following to a council scout shop (most units have merit badge counselor coordinators who can help with this):

  • Merit Badge Counselor Information form), http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34405.pdf,  listing qualifications with any required certifications attached
  • copy of a current Youth Protection Training certificate or card
  • completed BSA Adult Application form (including the signed disclosure/waiver form)

Write “Merit Badge Counselor Only” on the top of the registration form and use the position code of 42 (no registration fee is required for merit badge counselors). A BSA Adult Application form is required for all new counselors, even if they are currently registered with the council in another capacity or were previously a counselor (and it must be the latest version of the form – see: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-501.pdf)
