Computer/Smart phone: Internet, eMail Safety

BSA Indian Prairie Training Team will present…

A focused discussion relating to the dangers of the most powerful tool exposed to today’s youth:  The Internet / eMail

Who:             All are welcome to learn about Tech Risks!
When:           Tuesday November 6, 2018 @ 7:00-8:00pm  (Come after you VOTE!)
Where:          Good Shepherd Church, 1310 Shepherd Drive, Naperville, IL 60565
Lower Level room 5
Cost:              Free!   RSVP required by 11/4 to guarantee seat and C
yberCHIP card
Questions:   rich_fazio@hotmail.com

This is a uniformed event. Scouts need to be in uniform; bring a pen to fill out card.

BSA has recognized the serious implications of internet access to youth by adding internet safety topics to requirements back in 2008; in 2012 the CyberChip program was created but not added to requirements until most recently. CyberChip as a rank requirement for: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, Arrow of Light, Scout, Star.

Some fun facts relating to CyberChip are:
** There are four different versions of CyberChip skills (two cards) depending upon your age
** CyberChip MUST be signed off by a PARENT/Guardian and scoutmaster
** CyberChip is only good for one year

Discussion topics include navigating the CyberChip program, email fraud/spoofing, viruses and youth protection.

I am requesting youth AND parents attend. Parents: I have had a lot of parents report back that they learn as much as the kids do.  I not going to be overly graphic during my discussion, however, depending upon your child’s maturity level, I would encourage you to use the information provided to springboard further frank discussions in your own home. My suggestion is to answer any question from your child but also bring up some challenging conversation of your own. Push the conversation to the point of making your child slightly uncomfortable regarding the potential for badness (i.e. the conversation to a 10 year old should be very different to the conversation of a 17 year old).

Two Deep Leadership change coming soon!

Adult Supervision

(Effective October 1, 2018) Two registered adult leaders 21 years of age or over are required at all Scouting activities, including meetings. There must be a registered female adult leader over 21 in every unit serving females. A registered female adult leader over 21 must be present for any activity involving female youth. Notwithstanding the minimum leader requirements, age- and program-appropriate supervision must always be provided.

This includes Eagle Scout Project work days.

All adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as leaders. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.

Merit Badge Counselor Training now on-line

Merit Badge Counselor training is now available on-line at the BSA Learn Center.  The training consists of six short video courses with test questions at the end of each.  Each segment may be taken independently. The total training time should be about an hour – less if you have already taken some of the courses in the scoutmaster or committee position training sequences.

You may access the BSA Learn Center through your my.scouting.org account, either by clicking on the Learn Center Logo on the home page after login or through the Training Center tab on your dashboard.  In the Course Catalog tab add the two Merit Badge Counselor learning plans to your account (click the green plus) and then access the training through the Learn Center My Learning tab.

The in-person version of this training is still available. If your unit would like to schedule the in-person version of the Merit Counselor training, contact Dave Rypka.
